The ancestors of Kemp family brought their name to England in the wave of migration after Norman Conquest of 1066. The name Kemp is for a champion at jousting or wrestling. In medieval England, the jourt was used to train feudal knights for battle. Checking further we found the name was derived from the Old English word kempe, which is a derivative of the Old English word cempa, which means warrior or chanpion. Spelling variations include: Kemp, Kempe and others. First found in Kent where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
