Joseph was born in 1862 in Gordon, Victoria, Australia.  Joseph's father was Henry Joseph GRANTHAM and his mother was Charlotte VENVILL. He had two brothers named Henry and Charles.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named George, Elizabeth, Annie and Sarah.
