Cuthbert was born on February 18th, 1760 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland.  Cuthbert's father was John LEATHART and his mother was Elisabeth ELLIOT.  His paternal grandparents were Cuthbert LEATHART and Margaret LEATHART. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, James, William, Joseph, George, Robert, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth, Frances, Anne and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the fourteen children.
