Edward was born on March 15th, 1776 in Featherstone Castle, Cumberland - Northumberland.  Edward's father was John LEATHART and his mother was Elisabeth ELLIOT.  His paternal grandparents were Cuthbert LEATHART and Margaret LEATHART. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Cuthbert, Thomas, James, William, Joseph, George, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Frances, Anne and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the fourteen children.
