Elizabeth was born on April 16th, 1757 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland.  Elizabeth's father was John LEATHART and her mother was Elisabeth ELLIOT.  Her paternal grandparents were Cuthbert LEATHART and Margaret LEATHART. She had nine brothers and four sisters, named John, Cuthbert, Thomas, James, William, Joseph, George, Robert, Edward, Mary, Frances, Anne and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the fourteen children.
