Frances was born on November 18th, 1765 in Croftbank, Northumberland.  Frances' father was John LEATHART and her mother was Elisabeth ELLIOT.  Her paternal grandparents were Cuthbert LEATHART and Margaret LEATHART. She had nine brothers and four sisters, named John, Cuthbert, Thomas, James, William, Joseph, George, Robert, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne and Margaret.  She was the seventh oldest of the fourteen children.
