James was born on January 3rd, 1764 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland.  James' father was John LEATHART and his mother was Elisabeth ELLIOT.  His paternal grandparents were Cuthbert LEATHART and Margaret LEATHART. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Cuthbert, Thomas, William, Joseph, George, Robert, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth, Frances, Anne and Margaret.  He was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.
