Joseph LEATHART

  • Joseph was baptised 15.02.1771 and at the time his family were living in Featherstone Castle (this is in the north of England, either Northumberland or Comberland - this was the name of the village and does not imply they were landed gentry!!)
    He married Maria Davies on Abt. 1800 St Pancras Middlesex, England, daughter of William Davies.
    
    Although originating from Nothumberland at Featherstone Castle, where presumably his father was employed, Joseph must have found work in Denbighshire, Wales when in his 20's. Here he met and married Maria Davies and they had their first son William Davies. Joseph and Maria were to have 12 sons and 2 daughters in all.
    
    Later he moved to London and must have been fairly successful, for Ruby Skeggs writes that he lived in Goodge Street, London, which was the then fashionable part of town. Ruby writes that his wife was a Welsh lady who sang well, along with her daughters, and must have brought music into the home. Apart from his daughter Louisa, there is a good link of records to his other daughter and sons Fredrick and Francis Owen Leathart whom emigrated to Australia. The latter was a ships captain.
